California dreaming
Aug. 10th, 2008 05:53 pmWent to an awesome party last night at a friend of a friend's house up in the Hollywood Hills. Some of the most gorgeous views I've ever seen -- and God only knows how much a place like that must be worth, even in today's slumping housing market. Also, it's a bit weird to walk into someone's living room and to see a couple of Emmys sitting on their fireplace mantel. o.O Anyway, the party was low-key but fun -- great conversation and food, and all the while I could watch the changing light across Los Angeles and feel the most delicious sea breeze blow across my face.
This is why I'll continue to keep setting most of my stories in Southern California. They say "write what you know," and I've had the privilege of experiencing all sorts of settings here, from my shabby little bungalow in Pasadena that I used for Christine's home in No Return to mansions to rival Mr. Westerfield's home in Inheritance. It does make me thankful for having the opportunity to grow up here, godforsaken freeways and all.
Speaking of No Return, I put together a mix tape at Mixwit for it. That's a fun site, except for the frustration of songs you need not always being available, or looking like they're available and then disappearing once you try to drag them over to your mix playlist. Anyhow, I did manage to put together a decent mix, one that has most of the actual highlights from the playlist I listened to as I was writing the novel. Enjoy!
