Woot!

Neither storm, nor sleet, nor hospitalized fathers, nor mashed Mercedes could keep me from my appointed writing!

50057 / 50000 words. 100% done!

OK, so not done, though. Maybe halfway? I'll keep writing and will probably validate my word count next Sunday.

But here's where I'll wax philosophical about What This Year's NaNo Taught Me:
  • I have to be enthusiastic about the project.
  • If I write fast enough, I still have time to do research on the fly.
  • The "signpost" method seems to work best for me -- I have scenes scattered throughout the book that are the "target" scenes I aim for, but other than that it's sheer seat of the pants, baby.
  • I really can write almost every day (I think I've missed two days so far) if I stop angsting about it and just frigging do it.
  • Most of the time, I can't seem to tell a story in fewer than 100,000 words. :-P
Still no word on the car, though. I do have a rental, so at least I'm not totally without wheels. It's amazing how...adrift...I feel when I know I don't have access to a car!

...we're very, very close.

I'd like to say that I'll hit 50K tomorrow, but Tuesdays are always bad for me, as my manager is in a full day (she works part-time and has a very weird schedule). But if not tomorrow, then most likely Wednesday, and as long as I've kicked Nano's ass before Thanksgiving, I'm fine.

I won't get into the part where I'm pretty sure I'm barely halfway through this thing -- I've just finished setting up the complications that are going to rocket us through the second part of the novel, but at least I know where it goes from here (I even took notes! Go me!).

Gunther is at the auto-body place; I assume we'll know sometime tomorrow whether it's thumbs-up or thumbs-down. Our guy at Progressive totally has those dinks at Mercury's number, so he's not going to get them get away with much. He told us to go ahead and rent a car, because we'll be reimbursed for that, so I have my reservation in with our local Enterprise (they've been such gems in the past; I can't say enough nice things about them...and no, I'm not being sarcastic!).

Dad is out of ICU and back into a regular hospital room. They discovered an embolism in the same lung where he had cancer, but the cancer is still gone and they're treating the embolism with some pretty aggressive medications, so he's doing a lot better. No idea whether he's going to be home for Thanksgiving, but he's still with us, and that's good enough for me for now.

OK, not so much in terms of my word count. Got in a little over 3K today and hope to do the same tomorrow and Sunday. If I can pull it off, I might hit 50K by the end of the weekend. If not, I'm still in really good shape.

I don't know how many of you have heard about Harlequin's decision to open what amounts to a vanity publishing wing of the corporation, but let's just say that the blogosphere shitstorm had been completely unreal -- and highly entertaining. There are links all over the place, but really, I think Fandom Wank has the best writeup because not only are the comments priceless, but they've thoughtfully assembled all the most pertinent links in one central place. I mean, you know stuff is going down when Nora Roberts is arguing with a self-published author ad nauseum in the comments at Smart Bitches, Trashy Books. (BTW, Nora seems like a really awesome person, and I wished I liked her writing more...but I just can't get past the darn head-hopping. Her plots seem interesting, and the writing itself beyond the p.o.v. issues pretty great, but for me it's like trying to ignore a ginormous zit in the middle of a supermodel's face. But anyway, I digress.)

Also, Harlequin, when the RWA, the MWA, and the SFWA (all professional writers' groups) collectively say you suck, you know what?

You probably do.

My manager was out today, so I got in my 2K. :-P (And I don't even mean that in a slacker way...she doesn't really pay much attention to what I do as long as the work gets done...but both printers in the building are in my office, so whenever she prints something out, she has to come into my office to get it, and that's just a wee bit disruptive.)

In other news, we got sprayed by a skunk like whoah! this morning. I have never in my life smelled such a bad skunk spray. If I didn't know better, I'd think someone pelted the side of the house off the deck with about 50,000 pounds of rotten onions. I heard this very odd screeching noise this morning while I was lying in bed, and I thought it was a bird that had gotten caught in one of the bushes outside the bedroom window, but it got much louder when I went out into the main part of the house. I looked out the French doors to see what it was and didn't notice anything, but all of a sudden, WHAM! the worst skunkification I have ever smelled in my entire life.

I'm hoping it will start to dissipate soon, but in the meantime, if y'all have any suggestions for neutralizing it, I'm all ears.

Eh

Just around 1,000 words today. Work was unbelievably hectic, because we hosted the big Thanksgiving lunch thingy in my building today, and I helped with setup and teardown, and even after all that was done, the vibe still felt all weird and jangly. I think I wrote about 50 words when I was there, and then the rest after I got home. Even that was like pulling teeth, but at least I got something out there. Luckily, I have some very fun scenes coming up, so I think that'll help keep me motivated for the rest of the week.

...at around 2K a day. That's pretty much my max for regular work days. I sneak in some at work, and then finish up when I get home. If I keep going at this rate (knock wood), then there should be no problem with taking Thanksgiving Day off, and also the Saturday afterward, since that's when we plan to go to Loscon (local F/SF convention).

Yeah, some days, that's what it feels like. Anyway, despite today being one of those sucktastic days where you want to kill someone (or several someones...I didn't even go into the fantabulous fuck-up on the part of my dear husband that started off this not-so-glorious Monday), I managed to almost scratch out 2K. To be precise, it was 1,927 words, which is close enough for government work.

I know I wouldn't have gotten nearly that much if it hadn't been for the help of a few glasses of Sandeman's Special Reserve Port (the only thing in the house that was open). Then again, what better to drink whilst writing heavily Victorian steampunk than port? ;-)

Bit by bit

Wasn't feeling terribly motivated today, but I still got in my 2k. Middles are always the hardest parts for me with everything I write, so I don't see why NaNo should be any different.

In other news, the Archive of Our Own is now having open beta testing. I requested an account and got one really quickly. Not sure why I feel the need to have stuff up on yet another archive, except that I like the idea of this one, and I'm guessing a lot of the people on it will be more from LJ and not necessarily ff.n, so they might not have seen my stuff. I put up Blood and Ashes first -- it's one of my shorter pieces, and it's always gotten a good reception. Besides, I felt like I needed to get something het up there, because out of 61 Star Wars fics, only four were het (some were gen, but still the slash outnumbered the het by an amazing proportion). I don't think I'll ever quite comprehend the whole slash phenomenon, but then again, I don't understand how some people can like Brussels sprouts, either. ;-)

It's going to take a chunk of time to get all my stuff uploaded over there, because holy crap! do I have a lot of fics (and most of them are loooong), but I think it'll be a nice background project for the times when I feel as if I should be doing something productive but am too brain-dead to write.

Didn't quite get 3K today, but anything over 2 is OK by me. I had chores to do, etc., but I'm still well ahead of Nano's daily average. Yay!

We went to see 2012 last night. Best destruction of Los Angeles ever! The volcano coming out of Yellowstone was pretty epic, too. Maybe it's not great cinematic art, but I thought it was highly entertaining. Of course, getting to watch John Cusack for two hours and 40 minutes ain't bad, either. ;-)

Thank you to everyone for all your well wishes! I really appreciate it, and of course I'll post updates here as I travel through the publication process. I need to take some time this weekend to go over the contract and the rest of the paperwork they've sent me, but it looks like a pretty standard epublishing contract, as far as I can tell.

Luckily, I was able to pound out a little more than 3k to get back to work after two days in a row of no writing.

I'm really hoping to hit 35k by the end of the weekend, but we'll just have to see how things go.

Okay, that's a big old lie. I mean, yes, it's halfway to the NaNo finish line, but since when I have EVER written a novel that was only 50K?

25409 / 50000 words. 51% done!

I doubt I'll finish this month, but I'm not going to let this one languish...especially since the folks at CreateSpace are being nice enough to let NaNo winners have six months to redeem the free copy of their books, which means I should have plenty of time to finish the novel and put it through at least one edit before I redeem my freebie.

I'm tired, though. It's been a really hectic day. I'm surprised I got that many words in.

...but the flesh is telling me I am done. Somebody stick a fork in me already!

I was kind of hoping to make it to 25k today, but that's a lot in a day (a little over 3,300 words). I should be able to get there tomorrow with no problem, though. That's good, because I don't know how much writing I'm going to get done on Wednesday -- I have the day off, but so does Erik, and we're probably going to go out and do fun stuff instead of having me glued to my computer. Still, maybe I'll be able to squeeze in a little bit while he's in the shower. ;-)
christinex1001: (Default)
Still plugging away. Didn't make 2K today, but I had a lot of errand-running/chores to do, and I have to knock off early because I'm going to a steampunk ball tonight! (I'll post pictures tomorrow if anything turns out...I'm horrible at remembering to take photos.)

17043 / 50000 words. 34% done!

Still, progress is being made, and if I take a good whack at it tomorrow, I should be able to make it to 20K by the end of the weekend without too much trouble.

OK, not really, but I am doing so much better than the previous two years, it's not even funny. Guess it goes to show you what a difference it makes when you have a project you're really excited about.

Didn't quite make my goal of 2K today, but I still did more than NaNo's required 1,667. It's going to be a long day (I have to go try to facilitate that #$#@!! Beautification Committee tonight after my regular shift is over...should be fun...not), so I'm going to pack it in. Also, I have some real work to do. ;-) Luckily, Fridays are my quiet days, so I'm hoping I can take out a big chunk tomorrow afternoon (especially because a Major Scene is about to come up, and I want to be able to work on that without being interrupted).

I think doing the cover art is my favorite part. ;-) Okay, not really, but I like visual aids.
