We have a saying around here -- Southern California has four seasons: fire, flood, drought, and earthquake. Guess which one we're experiencing right now. (Actually, I guess it's two, if you count the drought that's responsible for the dry conditions around here.)
We're fine in Glendora. The major fires are up to the northwest, in the Sylmar/Granada Hills area, and to the south and east, in Anaheim Hills and Yorba Linda. Erik's daughter and her mom were actually evacuated, but I don't think their condo complex is in any real danger -- from what I can tell, the fires in that area are up in the hills, and they're a good mile or so away from where Kate lives. I think the Orange County Fire Dept. is just being cautious, as well they should.
Still, it's frightening to see the destruction that's been caused already, and to see how many homes are in danger. The winds have been terrible, and although they're supposed to start to die down after today, they'll have done their work.
Already more than 600 homes have been destroyed in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, and I know that number will go up.
Sometimes living in La-La Land really isn't a dream. For a lot of people right now, it's a nightmare.
